Evolution Poster : genetic distances of peoples
Size: 117.1 kB - File type: PNG imageThe descent of some peoples, based upon genetic analyses (source : Cavalli-Sforza et al. 1988). The branches are not to be interpreted in the perspective of time. Within the species of modern man, the mutual genetic differences between the peoples are insignificantly small. An (L) behind the name of a people means this people speaks a different language than would be expected based upon the genetic data. This evolutionary line is anthropocentric : man is placed in the centre, although he is not necessarily the end of evolution. In reality, evolution is not a ladder on which man is at the top. Man is, along with other species, only one branch of an evolutionary family tree that goes back to the first forms of life, about 4 billion years ago.
